Bio/Description:  For Luke and Kirsten Meisel, following Jesus has always been the “greatest of adventures”. Growing up in church-going families, both came to realize the difference between going to church and a life in Christ. Little did they anticipate the depth of relationship with Christ to come and the experiences they would share with a missional calling to reach those outside the Church.

Eighteen years of marriage, four energetic kids, three countries and two cats later, they continue to live out this adventure. Both remark their initial conception of the Christian journey was misguided, painted with untouchable spiritual superheroes and an emotionless, action-star Jesus. Instead, they have come to realize that Christian heroes are made through challenges, weakness, tears, and submission. Having a child on the autism spectrum has reiterated this truth. Luke states that “humor is a necessary ingredient” of their life. Without it, their adventure would be derailed by their self-confessed “chronic seriousness”.

Meeting at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, both Luke and Kirsten acquired teaching degrees and taught for several years before moving to bible school in Missouri and on to Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary outside Boston. Luke has served in ministry now for nine years, both as a missionary in Sweden and London and as a Christian Education Director/Youth Director in a Massachusetts Vineyard Church.

Luke and Kirsten enjoy living and ministering in Gothenburg very much. Their emphasis is embedding themselves in the culture. Their kids attend Swedish schools and Luke and Kirsten are fluent in Swedish. While they admit that the Gothenburg drizzle is a bit depressing, the spiritual climate can sometimes seem worse. With the highest number of single person households in Europe and one of the most secular societies in the world, Sweden is an Everest-experience without the altitude - a challenging place to minister. Despite this, the Meisels encounter many who show spiritual curiosity and a desire for true relationships, community, and hope. With God’s leading, they take each day at a time walking into people’s lives to help them hear the message of Christ.
